A Brief History

The Story of Anchor Bay Harbor

Anchor Bay Harbor was established as a private residential community in the heart of Chesterfield Township along the shores of Lake St. Clair. With its one-lane bridge entrance and quiet canal system, it was designed from the beginning to offer peace, privacy, and a close connection to the water.

Over the years, the neighborhood has grown into a vibrant and welcoming place, known for its scenic views, walkability, and strong sense of community. The HOA was formed by residents who recognized the need for local oversight and a shared commitment to maintaining the beauty and function of the neighborhood.

From its early days to today, the values have remained the same, take care of the surroundings, treat your neighbors well, and preserve what makes this place feel like home.

History was made in 2005 when the residents of Harbor Drive built the first paver road in Macomb County. They tore out their old asphalt road and replaced it with a paver road and proper drainage since the previous road was crumbling and deteriorating because of lack of proper drainage. The road is a private road and not under the auspices of the county so it had to be paid for by the residents. Since rebuilding the road was very expensive, the residents applied for and received a special assessment district (SAD) from the township and paid for it over a five-year period.

Since Anchor Bay Harbor is an island surrounded by water, we live with low-and high-water cycles. The last low-water cycle occurred in 2025 and the one previous to that was in 2000. In 2000 the HOA employed Harbor Building Services to utilize their weed harvester to attempt to alleviate some of the weed buildup that some residents were experiencing in front of their houses.

In 2020 the opposite problem occurred where we experienced high water. Water was flowing onto our island from both the canal and the lake. The HOA purchased pumps and hoses and hooked them up at various spots on the street to pump the water back into the lake. Special meters were purchased for DTE since the equipment was hooked up to several residences and the electrical costs were enormous.

One of the first building permits issued in 1948 to build a house:
